Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the questions we hear most often. If you don't see yours, please reach out - we’re happy to talk.

Do I need an eating disorder diagnosis to work with you?

No. Whether you have a diagnosis or you’ve never had a label but know food is a daily struggle — you belong here. You don’t need to prove anything to deserve care.

How is this different from seeing a regular dietitian?

Many nutrition practices are weight-centric—focused on achieving a particular body size or weight through dietary control. Forme and Flux takes a different approach. We don't use food rules or weight-based goal-setting. Instead, we focus on your long-term relationship with food, your metabolic health, and your overall wellbeing—using recovery-informed principles that respect your autonomy and your history.

How is this different from eating disorder treatment?

Specialized eating disorder treatment programs are essential for people with serious, acute eating disorders. Forme and Flux is not a substitute for that level of care. What we offer is ongoing, outpatient nutrition counseling for people who may have a history of disordered eating or body image concerns, but who don't require intensive treatment. We also support people who have completed more intensive treatment and are looking for continued nutritional guidance.

I'm using a GLP-1 medication. Can you help me?

Yes—this is an area of active focus at Forme and Flux. GLP-1 medications change how your body experiences hunger and fullness, and without thoughtful nutrition support, it can be easy to under-eat, lose muscle mass, or develop a strained relationship with food. We provide individualized guidance that prioritizes your nourishment and long-term health—not just weight outcomes.

Do you work with people in midlife?

Absolutely. Midlife brings real metabolic and hormonal shifts that affect appetite, body composition, energy, and mood. We offer nutrition support that acknowledges those changes and responds with evidence-based care—without defaulting to restriction or weight loss as the solution.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. While Forme and Flux is based in Maine, we offer telehealth services to clients in Maine and beyond. If you're not sure whether we can serve your area, please reach out and we'll let you know.

Do you take insurance?

We accept a range of insurance plans and offer self-pay options. Because this varies and insurance coverage can be complex, we recommend reaching out directly so we can discuss what works best for your situation.

What does a first appointment look like?

Your first appointment is an initial nutrition assessment—a comprehensive conversation about your health history, your relationship with food, your current eating patterns, and what you're hoping to work on. It's not a test, and there are no wrong answers. Our goal is simply to understand where you are so we can figure out the best path forward, together.

I've had bad experiences with dietitians before. How is this different?

We hear this often, and we take it seriously. If you've been given a meal plan that didn't fit your life, been weighed and shamed, or felt like a problem to be solved rather than a person to be heard—that's not what happens here. Forme and Flux is explicitly built around respect for your autonomy, your history, and your body. You set the pace. You define the goals. We follow your lead.

“I’m not sure if what I have ‘counts’ as an eating disorder. Can you still help me?”

Yes. You don’t need a diagnosis, a label, or certainty about what you’re experiencing to reach out. If your relationship with food or your body is causing you distress — whatever that looks like for you — that’s enough. We’ll figure out the rest together.
